SCA Packaging develops special corrugated pallet for RollerForks®

SCA Packaging Nederland BV, in collaboration with MSE-Forks (the manufacturer of the so-called RollerForks), has developed a new cardboard pallet. In 2003 MSE-Forks was the first to receive the Dutch Logistica prize for its innovative RollerForks®. The worldwide -patented RollerForks make it possible to load and unload containers and trucks without using pallets. By placing the goods on a so-called slipsheet, the RollerForks can easily roll along underneath the load. This is possible because the RollerForks are designed with two layers of rolls that lie one on top of the other. When the RollerForks are moved forwards or backwards on a floor, the rollers that lie on top of each other rotate against each other in opposite directions. Thanks to this design the forks can be easily moved along underneath loads while the load remains standing with respect to the floor.

Unfortunately, not all loads are suitable for RollerForks. In order to lift a load off the floor, the floor is used as a reference and the nose of the RollerForks should move easily between the floor and the slipsheet. But when goods are stacked there is no longer a reference framework on which the nose of the RollerForks can be guided and it becomes more difficult to insert the nose between the load and the slipsheet.

This lead to MSE-Forks teaming up with SCA Packaging to develop a new cardboard pallet which has been patented in Europe and is as thin as possible ± 35 mm but still provides sufficient room for positioning the RollerForks. The pallet consists of several “folded” blocks, a bottom layer and a top layer. Both layers are flexibly attached to each other by the folded corrugated cardboard. Due to the weight of the load and during transport the pallet will be pressed together but there will always remain an opening so that the RollerForks can be easily inserted into the pallet. When the RollerForks is pushed into the pallet, the pallet “opens” and the load can be easily lifted. SCA Packaging opted for this flexible pallet layer because the blocks cannot be damaged if these are deformed under load or during transport.

The RollerForks Flex-Pallet® is an excellent alternative to wood, plastic and other cardboard pallets with the following important advantages:

Laboratory tested according to ASTM D-642 23 gr and 50% RH for 3,000 kg and dynamically according to D-4169, II for 500 kg.

RollerForks Flex-Pallets are available in various dimensions such as Europallets, block pallets, white goods dimensions, etc. and can accommodate an average weight of 500 kg.
