The purchase costs of a pallet are much higher than a solid fiber slip sheet, a corrugated slip sheet or a plastic slip sheet. With the new world standard FAO-ISPM no.15 (protection of vermin by heat treatment) producers of wooden pallets need to increase their prices because of the extra handling costs. The extra costs can vary from 5% till 10% of the selling price and needs to be paid by the user of the pallets. In many countries the insurance companies have strict rules because of safety measures enforced by the fire department. The rules are getting stricter each day and in some cases the premium insurance has increased with 300% (source EPVisie nr.11 2003).
While using pallets you also have to deal with pallet return costs. In many cases the pallets that have been used during the transport of the goods, have to be sent back to the producer because of the deposit them. This means that lorries loaded with pallets drive thousands of km every year, in fact the lorry is transporting air. Other disadvantages of this pallet rental system is that all pallets need to be administrated and that you never know how many pallets you get back and when you get them back. Not to forget the space you waste by storing your pallets in your warehouse In the end al these extra costs are being passed on to the customer.
